To a pregnant woman, staying healthy is her most important watchword. This involves a lot of effort. According to obstetricians, the health of a mother is essential to the health of her baby. A healthy mother is less likely to experience complications during pregnancy. Healthy mothers give birth successfully to healthy children.
Here are a few things you must understand and do if you have the health of your baby at heart.
1. See your doctor
It is important you see your doctor at the time appointed. Don’t miss any appointment dates as failure to see your doctor may result in complications. Your doctor knows exactly what is best for you; he tells how to eat and the kind of work to engage in.
2. Take your prenatal vitamins
The neural cord of a baby later becomes its brain and spinal cord. This cord develops within the first month of pregnancy. For proper development, pregnant women must take essential nutrients such as folic acid, calcium, and iron.
3. Cut down on alcohol
Don’t take alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol reaches the baby through the bloodstream, crossing the placenta. This makes the baby end up with higher levels of blood alcohol than you have. Drinking alcohol can increase the risk of the baby developing fetal spectrum disorder (FASD). FASD leads to severe learning disabilities and behavioural complications.
4. Regular exercise is important
Exercise regularly as it helps prevent aches and pains, improve lethargic circulation in the legs of the mother, and gives the ability to handle the physical stress that comes with labour.
5. Avoid smoking
If there is any such thing to completely avoid, it is smoking. Even without pregnancy, smoking causes a lot of damages to every human involved, especially women. 90% of babies with placental abruption, stillbirth, and growth problems are adduced to smoking from their mothers. It also increases the risk of miscarriage.
